The replicase-encoding signal (RES) and replicase-recognition signal (RRS) in replicator-replicase systems. For generality, the RRS is shown as being distributed along the length of the replicator although in real genomes, this signal is often localized such that, for example, short terminal sequences are sufficient for the replication of a virus genome. The replicase structure carries memory of the RRS allowing recognition of competent templates (“pass/block mechanism”)
