Every edge is associated with a split of the taxa, but there may be a number of parallel edges associated with each split. The edges separate taxa on one side of the split from the taxa on the other side of the split. The length of an edge in the network is proportional to the weight of the associated split. This is analogous to the length of a branch in a phylogenetic tree.
