  1. For each structural parameter, the first line represents the Spearman's rank sum correlations with expression pattern, whereas the second line represents Spearman's partial correlations. Controlled variable for the columns of Exp avg is expression breadth, whereas that for the columns of Width is Exp avg . Intron density was defined as the ratio of intron number to CDS length, i.e. intron number per coding base. Exp tot , total expression level; Exp avg , average expression level; Width, expression breadth. CDS, Coding Sequence; UTR, Untranslated Region. Significance of correlations: no asterisks, P < 1e - 10; ***, 1e - 10 <P < 1e - 3; **, 0.001 <P < 0.05; *, P > 0.05. Numbers in bold indicate highly significant partial correlations (P < 1e - 10).
